Abstract

Despite growing interest in intersectionality, there is little consensus about what it means to use it as a critical framework in computing education research. This paper draws a crucial distinction between intersectional studies and studies that merely include intersectional populations.

The authors argue that genuinely intersectional research attends to structures of power, not just to the identities of participants — and they offer guidance for researchers making this choice.
